Warhammer 40000 Codex

Inquisition

They walk in darkness so the light of humanity may never fade.

More than a mere bureaucracy, the Inquisition acts as the Imperium’s hidden scalpel—a shadowy, supreme judicial force empowered by the God-Emperor to excise heresy, xenos infiltration, and sorcery from the galactic body. Operating with near-absolute authority, Inquisitors answer only to their own conscience and the High Lords of Terra, often bypassing standard Imperial laws and military chains of command to ensure humanity’s survival at any cost.

Organized into distinct factions known as Ordo, they function as a grim necessity within the Imperium's crumbling structure. While serving as the ultimate guardians against existential threats like Chaos and alien empires, their methods are frequently ruthless and paranoid, viewing the common citizenry with suspicion rather than protection.

Lore & Background

Founded during the Great Crusade by the Emperor Himself, the Inquisition was designed to be a tool of last resort, capable of acting where conventional armies and administrators could not. Over ten millennia, it has evolved into a sprawling, bureaucratic nightmare cloaked in secrecy. The three primary branches are the Ordo Malleus, which hunts daemons and Chaos sorcerers; the Ordo Hereticus, dedicated to rooting out human heretics and witches within Imperial society; and the Ordo Xenos, tasked with understanding and exterminating alien threats.

Inquisitors are granted the power of the 'Holy Writ,' allowing them to commandeer resources, execute anyone they deem a threat without trial, and even destroy entire worlds via Exterminatus if the situation demands it. This unchecked power has led to deep internal schisms, with radical Inquisitors believing that humanity must adapt or use forbidden knowledge to survive, while purists insist on absolute adherence to tradition and immediate destruction of any corruption.

Despite their noble purpose, the Inquisition is often feared more than the enemies they hunt. Their constant surveillance creates a culture of paranoia where neighbors spy on neighbors, and a single accusation can lead to the annihilation of a population. They are the immune system of the Imperium, but like an autoimmune disease, they sometimes attack the very body they are sworn to protect.

In Their Own Story

The rain on Fenksworld tasted of ash and old blood. Inquisitor Valerius stood over the smoldering crater that had once been a hive city's lower sector, his black robes heavy with the weight of the decision he just made. Beside him, an acolyte trembled, clutching a data-slate filled with evidence of a minor cult.

"It was only a dozen souls, Master," the boy whispered, looking up at the grey sky. "We could have purged them quietly. Why burn the whole district?"

Valerius turned slowly, his eyes reflecting the dying fires below. He did not see a tragedy; he saw a symptom. "The infection has spread to the water supply, child," he said, his voice devoid of mercy. "You do not cure a gangrenous limb by cutting out the wound; you cut off the leg. The Emperor demands no less than total victory."

He turned back to his retinue, raising a gauntleted hand to signal the Thunderhawk waiting in the smoke.

Reader's Guide

The Inquisition serves as the Imperium's ultimate safeguard against threats that conventional military or administrative bodies cannot handle. Its primary goal is the preservation of human purity and the eradication of corruption from within and without. This organization operates outside normal legal frameworks, granting its agents the authority to act with extreme prejudice against any perceived threat to the God-Emperor.

Membership is exclusive and secretive. Inquisitors are individuals selected for their unyielding devotion, often rising through the ranks of the Adeptus Ministorum, Astra Militarum, or even Rogue Traders. They are supported by a vast network of acolytes, servants, and specialized agents who operate in the shadows to gather intelligence and execute purges.

The faction is deeply divided into internal philosophies. Radicals believe that to defeat the enemy, one must understand it, sometimes utilizing forbidden technology or even daemonic powers, while Purists advocate for immediate, total annihilation of any anomaly. This ideological conflict often leads to civil wars within the Inquisition itself, known as 'Inquisitorial Schisms,' where entire fleets and worlds are consumed by the infighting between those who seek to save humanity at any cost and those who believe only absolute purity can ensure survival.
