Chaos Space Marines
Once heroes of humanity, now the galaxy's most terrifying enemies.
Chaos Space Marines are the fallen sons of the Emperor's own Legions, cast down from grace during the cataclysmic Horus Heresy and twisted by the seductive whispers of the Ruinous Powers. Once the galaxy's greatest champions of order, they now serve as the jagged spearhead of Chaos, waging an eternal crusade to unmake the Imperium of Man and reshape reality into a throne for their dark patrons. Driven from the material realm into the hellish maw of the Eye of Terror, these warriors have fractured into a kaleidoscope of rival warbands, united only by hatred for Terra and a hunger that no mortal flesh can satisfy.

Lore & Background
The fall began with the betrayal of Warmaster Horus, who seduced nine of the Emperor's Primarchs into a civil war that shattered the Great Crusade. Though the Heresy was ultimately lost at Terra, the traitor Legions fled into the Warp, emerging millennia later as the Chaos Space Marines. Over ten thousand years of corruption have twisted their genetics and minds; they are immortal in body but often insane in spirit, driven by the voices of Slaanesh, Khorne, Tzeentch, or Nurgle.
While some original Legions like the Word Bearers and Death Guard remain largely united under a single banner, others have fractured. The Black Legion, for instance, was formed by Abaddon from the remnants of multiple Traitor Legions after the Heresy rather than being one of the original ten that remained intact. Most Chaos forces exist as independent warbands, raiding Imperial worlds for souls, resources, and dark artifacts. Their armor is often adorned with grotesque symbols and daemonic engines, and their weapons are forged from dark metal and blessed by sorcery. They have no unified command structure beyond the ambition of their champions, leading to constant infighting even as they plot the destruction of the Imperium.
In Their Own Story
The void-ships did not merely drift; they rode the screaming currents of the Warp, their hulls scarred by ten millennia of bloodshed and etched with sigils that burned the retinas. On the bridge of the *Soul-Reaver*, a former Ultramarine captain, now a husk of pale flesh clad in rusted ceramite, stared into the abyss. His eyes were voids of violet fire, granted by the Dark Prince himself. "The Emperor is dead," he hissed to his brothers, their laughter sounding like grinding metal and tearing bone. "Tonight, we feast on another world for the glory of Slaanesh." The warp engines howled in agony as the ship surged forward, leaving a trail of burning worlds and broken souls in its wake.
Reader's Guide
Chaos Space Marines embody the ultimate betrayal, serving as the galaxy's most relentless antagonists. Their objective is absolute: the total annihilation of humanity and the shattering of the Imperial Throne. They are bound to the four Ruinous Powers, each demanding a terrible tithe—Khorne thirsts for endless slaughter and skulls; Nurgle offers resilience through grotesque decay; Tzeentch weaves schemes of sorcery and maddening change; while Slaanesh demands excess, perfection, and the corruption of all desire. Unlike their loyalist kin, these warriors are not bound by the Codex Astartes or a unified command structure. Instead, they fracture into independent warbands, from the disciplined Black Legion to the plague-ravaged Death Guard, united only by ambition and the promise of power in the Great Game.
