Warhammer 40000 Codex

Golden Throne

The eternal engine of human survival, fueled by the agony of a god.

The Golden Throne is a colossal, biomechanical sarcophagus and power generator located deep within the Imperial Palace on Terra. It serves as the literal life-support system for the God-Emperor of Mankind, who has been sustained upon it in a state of perpetual agony for over ten thousand years following the catastrophic wounds suffered during the Horus Heresy.

Beyond keeping the Emperor alive, the Throne is the linchpin of human civilization. It powers the Astronomican, a psychic beacon that allows Imperial vessels to navigate the warp and maintain the Imperium's vast supply lines. Simultaneously, it acts as a massive psychic dam, containing the chaotic energies of the Warp and preventing them from overwhelming Terra and consuming humanity.

Lore & Background

Constructed in the twilight of the Great Crusade, the Golden Throne was designed to house the Emperor should he ever fall. When Horus shattered his father during the Battle of Terra, the Throne became a life-support system of horrific complexity, fusing ancient human engineering with scavenged xenos technology (often rumored to be Necron in origin) to keep the God-Emperor's consciousness tethered to the physical realm.

For ten millennia, the machine has demanded a tithe of souls. Thousands of sanctioned psykers are burned daily within its mechanisms, their life forces consumed to fuel the Astronomican and sustain the Emperor’s existence. It is a grim necessity; without this constant sacrifice, the Warp would tear Terra apart, and humanity would be lost in the darkness between stars.

The Throne Room itself remains the galaxy's most secure location, guarded by the silent vigilance of the Custodians. Within, the Emperor sits motionless—a withered husk sustained by terrible power—while his mind drifts through the immaterium to guide ships and hold back the tide of daemons.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Throne Room tasted of ozone and ancient incense, thick enough to choke on. High within the Imperial Palace, far above the smog-choked surface of Terra, Kaelen stood before the monstrosity that was the Golden Throne. It loomed like a cathedral of gold and rotting flesh, pulsing with a sickly, rhythmic light that seemed to breathe.

He could feel them—the psychic screams of thousands of souls currently being consumed by the machine's insatiable hunger. The pressure was physical, pressing against his skull as he watched the latest batch of psykers dragged forward on chains. They vanished into the furnace without a sound, their lives extinguished in an instant to keep the God-Emperor breathing for one more day.

Kaelen lowered his head, tears cutting tracks through the grime on his face. He knew that if this machine ever stopped, the stars would go out, and the darkness would finally win. So he watched, he prayed, and he waited for the next sacrifice to be made in the name of survival.

Reader's Guide

The Golden Throne is a strictly forbidden location within the Imperial Palace. Access is restricted solely to the Adeptus Custodes and those directly summoned by the Emperor's will. All other approaches are met with lethal force, as the integrity of the Throne must be protected from all threats.
