Warhammer 40000 Codex

Creation of Primarchs

Twenty perfect sons, torn from their father's grasp by the chaos of the Warp.

The Creation of the Primarchs stands as the pivotal genesis event of the Great Crusade era, marking the Emperor's desperate gamble to secure humanity's future against the encroaching darkness of the Warp. In a secret laboratory beneath the Imperial Palace on Terra, the God-Emperor attempted to clone his own genetic essence into twenty perfect sons, intending them to be the ultimate generals and leaders for his coming conquests.

Outcome
Dispersal of the sons across the galaxy

Lore & Background

Each son was cast into the void of the Empyrean, where they were swept across the galaxy by turbulent currents of psychic energy. They landed on diverse worlds, ranging from death worlds to utopias, and were raised by local human populations or indigenous tribes, often unaware of their true heritage. This separation proved to be a double-edged sword; while it allowed them to develop unique strengths suited to their adopted homeworlds, it also left them vulnerable to the subtle corruption that would eventually fracture the Imperium during the Horus Heresy.

In Their Own Story

The sterile air of the sub-palace laboratory crackled with ozone and the sharp tang of antiseptic, broken only by the low hum of twenty amber-lit vitrines. Inside each glass womb floated a fetus far larger than any normal human child, their forms coiled in suspended animation, already radiating a terrifying potential. Before them stood the Emperor, his face hidden behind the golden visage of his armor, a rare flicker of paternal pride softening his gaze as he reached out to touch the first pod's surface. He whispered a benediction for the future of mankind. Then, the lights died in a violent strobe. A sound like reality tearing at its seams echoed through the chamber—not machinery failing, but the universe itself screaming. The Warp surged, invisible, grasping claws snatching the genetic threads that bound them to the material realm. With a silent, psychic shriek that shattered the foundations of Terra, the twenty sons were ripped from their father's grasp, leaving behind only empty, swirling voids and a solitary figure left alone in the sudden, crushing dark.

Reader's Guide

The Emperor eventually locates his sons one by one over centuries, bringing them back to Terra to form the core of the Astartes Legions. This reunion sets the stage for the Great Crusade, but the scars left by their separation and the subtle whispers of Chaos planted during their exile sow the seeds of future betrayal. The story culminates in the Horus Heresy, where the fractured bond between father and sons leads to civil war.
